Biographical information concerns Dr. Spencer and his family. Correspondence includes letters by Dr. spencer as a student at Davidson, as president of the college, and as President Emeritus. Literary material includes speeches given as president of the college and a copy of his doctoral thesis, "Cornerstone of Defense: a History of the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 from Inception to Enactment." Appointment books are from his years as president (1968-1983). Dr. Spencer was the 14th president of Davidson College from 1968-1983. He was born in Rock Hill, S.C., in 1919. He graduated from Davidson summa cum laude in 1940; served in the U.S. Army from 1940-1945, his duties including Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Davidson College (1941-1943).
