Photograph album, 1907-1910, of Fred James Murphy, a one-time student at the Michigan College of Mines in Houghton, Michigan. Includes images from high school in Petoskey, Michigan, mostly class pictures. Also continues in Houghton with less formal images including student activities, the "Lemon Squad" in surveying class and field trips to the Iron Country and local mines. Continues with pictures from the Colorado School of Mines, where Murphy may have matriculated after Michigan College of Mines, as well as from different mines in Colorado, including the Cripple Creek gold mine.

In 1901 Michigan Mining School (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan received funding for two additional buildings. The Civil and Mining Engineering Building, was built at a cost of $28,880, was a two-story hip-roofed structure with a five-story tower centered on the front. Fred James Murphy was a graduate of Petoskey High School in Petoskey, Michigan before enrolling at the Michigan College of Mines in Houghton, Michigan. Alumni directories indicate that he entered the college in 1906; however, there is no record that he graduated. He may have transferred to the Colorado School of Mines.
