Photograph collections, 1910-1944, of Newton C. Marshall, a 1913 graduate of the Michigan College of Mines (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan. Includes mining and smelting images from Michigan's Copper Country and Iron Range as well as images from the Columbian mining operations of the South American Gold & Platinum Co. Also includes roles of film from the South American operations. Marshall was employed by the company from 1915 through his retirement in the early 1950s, eventually becoming the general manager.

Born in 1888 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Newton C. Marshall graduated from the Michigan College of Mines (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan in 1913. Upon graduation he worked as an instructor in mine surveying at the College as well as a mining engineer for the Winona Copper Company in Winona, Michigan. In 1901 Michigan Mining School (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan received funding for two additional buildings. The Civil and Mining Engineering Building, was built at a cost of $28,880, was a two-story hip-roofed structure with a five-story tower centered on the front. The brick building had a high sandstone basement and a number of round-arched windows, adding to the Italian Renaissance Revival feel. In 1925, an addition was added to the building.
