New York State Asylum for Insane Criminals collection, 1878-1892.

Eleven letters and one invoice from the State Asylum for Insane Criminals in Auburn, N.Y., dating from 1878 to 1892. Eight letters are written by medical superintendant Carlos F. MacDonald, and three by steward James F. Howell; all are addressed to the treasurer of Otsego County (Frederick L. Palmer, John F. Renstle, Edwin S. Bundy, and Moses H. Lippitt), regarding payments for asylum inmates from that county. The invoice, dated October 1, 1889, is also addressed to the county of Otsego for the care of Levi Milks, and signed by medical superintendant H.E. Allison.

The State Asylum for Insane Criminals was the first institution in America for the the criminally insane, established in 1859 as the New York Asylum for Insane Convicts on the grounds of Auburn State Prison in Auburn, N.Y. In Apr. 1892, the institution relocated from Auburn to Matteawan (Fishkill). The following year it was renamed Matteawan State Hospital.
