Charles F. Gunther papers, 1660-1920.

Correspondence, invoices for items purchased by Gunther, account books (2 v., 1892-1898), diary for 1861, biographical sketch, and certificates of Gunther, a Chicago candy manufacturer, historical collector, and operator of Gunther's Libby Prison War Museum. Most items relate to Gunther's acquisition of historical artifacts, letters, and other memorabilia. The biographical sketch traces his life from birth in Germany (near Wurttenburg), childhood in Pennsylvania, settlement in Peru (Ill.), service on a Confederate boat on the Arkansas River, work as a traveling salesman, establishment of his confectionary business, and acquisition of historical artifacts. Other topics in the Gunther papers include operation of the museum and sale of curios (according to account books), exhibition of items at the Omaha Exposition (1899), construction of a mausoleum in Rosehill Cemetery, Chicago Democratic politics and Gunther's service as 2nd Ward Alderman and as city treasurer. Also, several folders of colonial American documents collected by Gunther, including sermons and various financial and legal papers, along with a 1676 English writ regarding the Cambridgeshire militia.
