Architectural records of John M. Van Osdel, 1856-1865.

Account books (vol. 1: 1856-1868, vol. 2: 1868-1886, vol. 3: 1886-1900) containing job records of Van Osdel, who was considered the first Chicago architect. Volumes list kinds of work performed for each job; names of contractors, painters, plumbers, prices, and payments; sometimes includes sketch of floorplan. Volumes 1 & 2 include dwellings and hotels, the McCormick and Reaper Blocks, addition to the Court House, etc. Volume 3 also incudes apartment buildings, factories, and office buildings and the use of "fireproof construction."
