Charles O. Matthews, correspondence, 1890-1944 1917-1937.

The Matthews collection is composed of censored letters written during World War I by Matthews to his family. Also included in the collection are Matthews' military records, military orders and letters of commendation for bravery in France. Additional items include a program from a 1937 RDVA reunion and postcards. Photocopies of the original materials used to compile a family publication are also available. Other materials include: transcripts of correspondence, newspaper clippings and photographs of Matthews in his military uniform.

Charles Oakson Matthews was born in Washington, D.C., in 1890. In 1917, Matthews enlisted in the District of Columbia National Guard. Matthews served as part of the Medical Corps that followed the frontline troops and was discharged 1919 at the rank of corporal. As a civilian, he was trained as a carpenter and in architectural draftsmanship. Matthews married Thelma Beall in 1920.
