Correspondence, diaries, financial records, genealogical data, newsclippings and other papers, mostly personal, chiefly concerning J. Sterling Morton, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, and his son Joy Morton, founder of the Morton Salt Company, together with scattered papers of Morton's other sons, Paul, railroad official and U.S. Secretary of the Navy; Carl, and Mark, associates in the family salt interests; papers of Joy's wives Carrie and Margaret and his aunt Emma; and other family members. J. Sterling Morton's papers relate to his work as a publicist for Nebraska railroads, railroad legislation, Otoe County (Neb.) bonds, New Mexico mining interests, political activities of George H. Pendleton and Clement L. Vallandigham, the Civil War and antiwar Democrats, tariffs during the 1880s, silver question in the 1890s, and politics and the Democratic Party in Nebraska. Joy Morton's papers relate to the operation of the Morton Salt Company, meat packing in Nebraska City (Neb.), mica mining in New Mexico, and other business interests; establishment of an Arbor Day memorial in Washington, D.C., in honor of J. Sterling Morton, who originated the holiday, and conveyance of Arbor Lodge to the Nebraska State Historical Society; and Morton's interest in historical research and in the Chicago Historical Society. Other topics include family affairs, meat packing in Nebraska and Chicago (Ill.); and the Democratic and Republican parties, on the national level and in Nebraska.

Clement Laird Vallandigham was born July 29, 1820, in New Lisbon, Ohio (now Lisbon, Ohio), to Clement and Rebecca Laird Vallandigham. His father, a Presbyterian minister, educated his son at home. In 1841, Vallandigham had a dispute with the college president at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He was honorably dismissed, but he never received a degree. Edwin M. Stanton, the future Secretary of War under President Lincoln, was Vallandigham's close friend before the Civil War....
