Francis P. Kane papers, 1937-1979.

Military records, biographies, correspondence, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, photographs, and other papers of Francis P. Kane, a Chicago military officer and local government official. Most of the collection consists of correspondence and newspaper clippings relating to his service with the 33rd Division of the Illinois National Guard and U.S. Army and with several veterans and military associations, such as the American Legion, the Chicago Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars, and the Association of the United States Army. Also present are election materials and press clippings about serving as a trustee of the Metropolitan Sanitary District (1962-1967), Deputy Commissioner of Public Works for Chicago (1967), and Special Assistant to the Mayor in charge of gun registration; as well as materials on personal and family matters and his membership in the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. Topics include Kane's distinguished service during World War II in the Philippines; and peacetime national guard actions during natural disasters and during riots in 1966 in Chicago and Cicero, and in 1967 in Cairo while Kane was the commander of the Illinois National Guard. The collection also includes news clippings on the 1968 Chicago riots in April and in August, which took place after Kane was removed as state commander by the governor in February 1968, during a dispute about the promotion of National Guard officers that included racial issues.
