Of significant importance to the collection are materials pertaining to the June 28, 1927 first transoceanic flight by Albert Hegenberger and Lester Maitland. They flew a Fokker C-2 Trimotor from Oakland, California to Wheeler Field on the island of Oahu, a distance of 2,416 miles. Hegenberger was the navigator on the history-making flight. Both men were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and subsequently the Mackay Trophy for 1927. Other items within the collection pertain to the many patents secured by Hegenber which include patents for pressure indicators, sextants for aircraft, aircraft compasses, and systems of navigation. Additionally, there a documents and reports pertaining to the "blind landing system," solving the problems of fog flying, compass test flights, and the development and functions of the Air Corps and Signal Corps.

Lester J. Maitland was an aviation pioneer and a veteran pilot of World Wars I and II. He joined the United States Army Air Corps and by age nineteen had become a flight instructor. Albert Hegenberger was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1895, later attended MIT, and then joined the Signal Corps in 1917. He served as a flight instructor during World War I, was subsequently assigned to McCook Field in Dayton, Ohio, and then began researching flight and navigation instrument development.
