Joel Salsman collection on Pacific Northwest composers, circa 1930-2001.

Compositions, clippings and publications on Pacific Northwest composers, correspondence, photographs and programs. The bulk of the materials are compositions. A complete listing of compositions is available in the Special Collections' Reading Room. The Joel Salsman Collection consists of musical scores and recordings of music composed by Pacific Northwest composers. Joel Salsman (1941-2001), a Seattle-area pianist, performed and recorded music by several Pacific Northwest composers including James Beale, William Bergsma, Leonard Berkowitz, Alan Hovhaness, Gerald Kechley, Lockrem Johnson, George McKay, Gloria Swisher, Diane Thome, Mark Tobey, John Verrall and others. Salsman's own manuscript scores also reside in the collection. The collection includes a small group of correspondence and news clippings on Alan Hovhaness. The collection has been divided by location; the recordings are in the Music Library.
