Penelope Ploughman was a member of the University at Buffalo's Sociology Department and Dr. Adeline Levine's "Love Canal Research Group" from 1977-1980. Building on her work as part of the "Love Canal Research Group", Ploughman wrote her dissertation on the news coverage of Love Canal.
