Horatio Spafford papers, 1845-1879.

Deeds, leases, mortgages, receipts, clippings, certificates, correspondence, business cards, naturalization paper, etc. relating to Horatio Spafford and his business in Chicago. The collection contains Horatio's license to practice Law in Chicago (1862, 1863, 1865, 1866). The naturalization certificate for Christian Frederickson (1858). There are also legal papers relating to Mary Ann Hubbard of Boston (Mass.). The collection is primarily deeds to his properties in Chicago (Ill.). Horatio Spafford was a Chicago lawyer who invested in real estate before the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and subsequently lost most of his properties. He was married to Anna Tubena Larssen in 1861. In addition to the property documents the collection also contains miscellaneous correspondence.
