A.T. Andreas papers, 1861-1913.

Letters, diaries (2 v.), and other documents by, to, or collected by A.T. Andreas, a Civil War soldier and later Chicago businessman and historian. Items from the Civil War period while Andreas served in the 12th Illinois Infantry include letters (16) to his future wife, diaries (1864, when he was a Commissary of Subsistence in the U.S. Army of the Tennessee, and 1865), a slave insurance policy, a stamped U.S. military railroad pass, and a blank Confederate muster roll. Some later materials relate to his participation in civic and veterans' organizations, including the Military Order of the Loyal Legion and the Society of the Army of the Tennessee. Also present are letters, notes, and transcripts from memoirs and from township and county records used in the compilation of Andreas' History of Chicago and his History of Cook County (ca. 1874-1885, 12 folders). Correspondents include Zebina Eastman, Fred A. Hunt, and J. D. O'Conner. Topics include the history of Chicago newspaper publishing, Masonic and other lodges, firefighters, contributions to Kansas sufferers from the plague of grasshoppers (1874-1875), the meaning of Native American place names, and the shooting of Colonel Grosvenor during the Chicago Fire.
