The Society of the Emeriti began in February 1978. After Dr. Lloyd Elliott entertained two groups of emeriti and their wives the idea was born to form a permanent emeriti group that would meet once a month for lunch, education and conversation. Dr. John Latimer was principle mover in forming the group. To be a member of SOTE, as it was called, one had to be an emeritus of the university or have 25 years of service to the university. Thelma Hunt (1903-1992) in her long career as a pioneer woman psychologist, had a considerable impact on the discipline of psychology. She was born November 30, 1903 in Aurora, Arkansas and entered the George Washington University (GW) in 1921. She earned an A.B. (1924), with Distinction in Psychology, an M.A. (1925) and a Ph.D. (1927).
