Doolittle Raiders collection, 1992.

Research materials, Apr. 1992, collected by David Moniz, a journalist with The State newspaper, during coverage of the fiftieth anniversary celebration in Columbia, S.C., of the air attack on Tokyo, 18 Apr. 1942, known as the Doolittle Raid; also includes papers documenting planning and organization of the festivities by various organizations in Columbia. Collection includes drafts of feature articles by Moniz and others; press schedules and releases; planning memos; photographs and a bibliography. Of special interest are Moniz's transcripts of interviews with Col. John Doolittle, son of Gen. James "Jimmy" Doolittle; Gen. David Jones and Columbia native Horace Crouch, surviving Raiders; Doolittle biographer Edward Jablonski; and Columbia attorney Augustus "Gus" T. Graydon, recalling wartime service on the domestic and Pacific fronts. Supporting documents include photocoies of clippings and photographs, ca. 1942-1944; biographical sketches; and article, Against All Odds, by Edward Oxford, published Apr. 1992 in American History Magazine, including maps, photographs, and drawings re the raid. Miscellaneous items from various organizations and businesses indicate the cooperative planning which went into the celebration. Benefactors include: Chernoff/Silver and Associates, the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission, the South Carolina State Museum, and Trustus Theatre programme, from its production of: Into the Yonder Zone, a world premier by Doug Williams. Related items include a promotional booklet promoting construction of The Mighty Eighth Air Force Heritage Center (Savannah, Ga.), including an endorsement by Gen. James Doolittle, USAF, Ret., former Commander, Eighth Air Force, England; and 11 newspaper articles regarding the reunion written by Moniz.

James Harold "Jimmy" Doolittle (December 14, 1896 – September 27, 1993) was an American military general and aviation pioneer who received the Medal of Honor for his daring raids on Japan during World War II.
