Roy W. Drier was born June 6, 1897 in Calumet, Michigan. He attended the local schools, graduating from Calumet High School in 1915. He then enrolled in the Michigan College of Mines (now Michigan Technological University) in Houghton, Michigan, graduating with a bachelor's degree, an engineer of mines degree, a metallurgical engineering degree and a master of science degree.
