Julia Morgan (1872-1957) graduated from University of California, Berkeley's Civil Engineering department in 1894, studying architecture unofficially under Bernard Maybeck. With Maybeck's encouragement, she went on to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1898, Morgan became the first woman to study at the Ecole, graduating in 1900. The Ebell Club of Los Angeles was formed in 1894 by a group of women wishing to take up the work of Adrian Ebell. The club is dedicated to expanding women's education in the arts, sciences and literature and the advancement of women in these branches of study and all areas of culture. The Ebell Club of Los Angeles grants college scholarships, hosts lectures, and produces plays and concerts.
