Elizabeth F. Cheney papers, 1850s-1986.

Correspondence, legal documents, account books, diaries, scrapbooks, genealogies, family photographs, sympathy letters and other mourning items, and other miscellaneous papers of Miss Elizabeth F. Cheney of Oak Park (Ill.), who gathered much of this material from members of several families of which she was the last direct descendent. In addition to Miss Cheney, persons represented in the collection include Anna Augusta Carpenter, Philo Carpenter (1850s onward), Aubry and Anna S. Clary, Andrew and Mary Hooker Dole (1870s-1910s), Charles Norton Owen (ca. 1930s-50s), Grace O. Solomon, Charles Solomon, Anne Cheney Solomon, Grace Cheney Harlow, Mrs. William W. Strong. Includes Miss Cheney's expenditure logs (1963-71, at Crystal Lake, Michigan, and Deere Isle, Maine), materials about world's fairs, items about Chicago real estate holdings of various family members. Includes items by R. Baily and Edward Durand about the California gold rush (1849-50). Includes genealogies of the following families: Barnes, Carpenter, Cheney, Dole, Durand, Hooker, Yale. Includes articles and pamphlets about Philo Carpenter, an early Chicagoan, and a few items by him, materials on the formation of the First Congregational Church (Chicago) and on the dedication of a Chicago public school named in his honor in the 1960s; a diary of T.B. Carpenter; a scrapbook begun by Anna Augusta Carpenter in 1849; and 2 letters from A.G. Carpenter, Gansevart (N.Y.), August 9, 1856. Includes scrapbook (1903, 1912-1934) compiled about the Chicago Civic Opera Company, also known as the Grand Opera Company and as the Chicago Opera Association. Scrapbook contains programs, newspaper clippings, performance synopses, performance previews and reviews, and lists of box holders. Several newspaper clippings relate to the history of the Chicago Civic Opera Company. Also included are photographs of opera singers, sets, scenes, and conductors. Some of the programs note if the event was attended alone or with companions. The scrapbook holds both loose and attached materials.
