Chicago Tribune expert fees litigation records, 1916-1929.

Legal documents, including briefs, argument, and exhibits; newspaper articles; copies of City of Chicago records; and tabulations of payments related to the Expert Fees Case, a lawsuit filed by the Chicago Tribune Company in April 1920 in the Circuit Court of Cook County, charging that Mayor William H. Thompson, George F. Harding, and Michael J. Faherty conspired with two city building appraisers, Frank H. Mesce and Austin J. Lynch, to defraud the city of nearly 3 million dollars in overpayments related to the building of the Michigan Avenue bridge and other "City Beautiful" building projects. Included are materials on the appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court in 1929-30, which overturned the conviction by Justice Hugo Friend of the Circuit Court.
