John Stone (1936-2008), poet, physician, and lecturer. Stone was born in Jackson, Mississippi. After getting his B.A. from Millsaps College in 1958 and his M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1962, Stone accepted a fellowship in cardiology at Emory University. In addition to teaching at Emory, Stone also worked at Grady Memorial Hospital from 1974-1985. Stone's first book of poetry, THE SMELL OF MATCHES was published in 1972.
