Civil War letter of William Lowd, 1864 Dec. 28.

Letter written by William Lowd to Col. Charles H. Long, of the 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery Regiment, concerning his son Sedley Lowd, who on 14 Oct. 1864, was mustered into the 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery, Company L against his will. Sedley was considered a deserter on October 18th and was apprehended on December 24th. In this letter, William Lowd asserts that his son was deceived by a Mr. Eastman and did not desert. It is unknown how successful William Lowd was in pleading his son's case, but Sedley Lowd remained in the 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery until 5 Sept. 1865, when he was discharged.
