The Philip Barry papers, 1930-1984 (bulk 1930-1949)

The Philip Barry papers consist primarily of manuscript correspondence and plays. Correspondents include Rosemary and Stephen Vincent Benet, Katherine Bregy, William C. Bullitt, Henry W. Clune, Edsel Ford, Brendan Gill, Lillian Gish, Morris Hadley, Katherine Hepburn, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Gerald Murphy, John O'Hara, Joseph Verner Reed, Robert Sherwood, and Robert Sinclair. Among the theatrical manuscripts are drafts of "Here come the clowns", "Second threshold", and "Hotel universe", as well as the holograph manuscript of the early play, "A man of taste". Supplementing the manuscripts are many playscripts by Barry, and related material, such as programs, playbills, review clippings, opening night telegrams, copyright certificates and contracts. Other papers include files on family property and statements of assets. Completing the collection are a series of scholarly works about Barry, including advance proofs for Brendan Gill's book "States of grace", doctoral dissertations by Robert Anderson Gaines and David C. Gild, and a master's thesis by Sterling P. Kincaid, Jr.

American playwright Philip Jerome Quinn Barry was born on June 18, 1896 in Rochester, N.Y. He was the youngest of the four children of James Corbett Barry and Mary Agnes Quinn. James Barry was a successful marble and tile contracter whose family had emigrated from Ireland when he was ten. His wife, also of Irish descent, was a Philadelphian, daughter of the proprietor of a lumber business.
