This is a diary of Mumford's journey from New York City to Buffalo, New York primarily by boat via the Hudson River and the Erie Canal. Almost everyday, Mumford records the sights, scenes, and the people he encounters at a time when the western frontier of New York State was opening up to new settlement and development as a result of the Erie Canal's construction.
