Dabney family papers, 1825-1915.

The collection contains nearly 600 letters from 1825 to 1915, many of them concerning the family's foreign commercial interests and later the travels of Frank Dabney's mother, sisters, aunts, grandparents, and cousins. Also included is the 1928 journal of James M. Dabney, which describes his voyage from Faial to St. Thomas, Vera Cruz, and Savannah. There are also clippings that eulogize Charles William Dabney at his death in 1871 and his son, John Pomeroy Dabney, at his death in 1874.

Members of the Dabney family were the first, second, and third consuls for the Azores. They were John Bass Dabney (1766-1826); Charles William Dabney (1794-1871); and Samuel Wyllys Dabney (1826-1893). John Pomeroy Dabney (1822-1874) acted as vice consul as well as consul to Prussia. The family prospered through its foreign trade connections in England, Scotland, Germany, France, Mexico, and elsewhere, maintaining at least four estates on Faial Island in the Azores.
