Fragment comprising pages five and sixteen of a draft of the short story which was first published in "Scribner's Magazine," August 1934, and later in "Collected stories." There are some differences between this draft and the final version, particularly the absence of the vernacular phrasing Faulkner adds to the dialogue in the final version. Faulkner has also scrawled three sums in the margins and crossed through and red lined an entire segment.
