O. Henry was born as William Sydney Porter on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, NC. He worked as a pharmacist in Greensboro and moved to Texas for his health in 1882 where he became a ranch hand. Porter relocated to Austin, TX and worked as a pharmacists, served as draftsman at the Texas General Land Office, a teller at First National Bank of Austin, and started a humorous weekly magazine, The Rolling Stone. Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1875, Samuel Edward Gideon's formal education included the study of architecture at M.I.T. and Harvard, as well as a degree from the School of Fine Arts (Fontainebleau, France). He taught at Texas A&M and M.I.T. before becoming a professor at the University of Texas in 1913.
