William L. Mitchell collection, 1930-1988.

The William Mitchell collection is primarily comprised of photographs and artwork. Also included are manuscript materials, clippings, and advertising items. There are four series: Professional Career at General Motors which includes photographs and clippings of automobiles Mitchell was involved with at General Motors; William L. Mitchell Design which contains clippings, brochures, and photographs for projects created by the design studio; Personal Interests which reflects Mitchell's interest in both automobile and motorcycle racing; and Original Artwork and Prints which contains paintings, photographs, and sketches of individual automobiles, racing, cityscapes, and organizational emblems.

William L. Mitchell was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Greenville, Pennsylvania. He joined the Art and Color Section at General Motors in 1935 and in 1937 was named Chief Designer, Cadillac Studio. His first assignment was to develop a sports sedan. The Cadillac Sixty Special introduced in 1938 was an outstanding success. Mitchell remained at General Motors for 42 years, retiring as Vice President, Design Staff in 1977.
