Correspondence, minutes of meetings (1867-1958), admission and dismissal ledgers, financial records, case files, and other records of the Chicago Nursery and Half-Orphan Asylum, which provided day-care services for working mothers and served as an orphanage. Since the 1930s, the organization was known informally as Chapin Hall for Children at its new building (1931) at 2800 West Foster, which served as a home for dependent children. Some children who resided there were adopted and left the orphanage to join new families. The collection also includes correspondence and reports (1946-1954) related to the Chapin Hall Ridge Farm Preventorium in Lake Forest (Ill.), an organization seeking to assist dependent children and neglected children with behavioral problems. An oversize folder contains rules and regulations, and a list of donors (ca. 1950). Case records and daily notes on clients include: senior girls unit log (1977-1981) and senior boys unit log (1977-1981); individual case files (1981-1984); Ridge Farm boys records (1984).
