Virginia Brockington Gourdin genealogical collection, 1730-2007 (bulk, 1959-2007)

Genealogical collection re lineage of various S.C. families, particularly the Huguenots who emigrated to S.C. and their descendants, as well as topical files on various subjects. Surnames represented among her files are Gourdin, Gaillard, Couturier and many other allied families. With few exceptions, correspondents chiefly discuss family history information; includes published newsletters and other materials from local, national and international meetings of genealogy and Huguenot societies held in Florida, France, England, and South Africa; and travel guide books to various areas of France and Switzerland. Other files include correspondence, 1984-1998, with Jacob C. Belin (Boxes 5-6); issues related to Charleston's history, growth, and historic preservation, including Charleston County Reassessment, 1971; a file re the Gourdin Residence (14 Tradd Street in Charleston); topical files re legal cases and public controversies: "Exchange Bank of Kingstree vs. Williamsburg County Historical Society, 1989" and "Gourdin Dispute with SC Parks, Recreation and Tourism, 1984." Files, 1999-2000, re controversy over display of the Confederate flag on the grounds of the S.C. State House with petition signed by former legislators expressing support for the flag's removal from the dome; Gourdin had been a member of the S.C. House of Representatives during the centennial of the Civil War at which time the flag was first flown; she organized a petition signed by surviving members of that session of the General Assembly who expressed support for ending the practice (all in Box 6) Photographs (Box 9 : folder 15) include images of Gourdin and her mother, Ada Brockington Gourdin; oversize folder contains family charts: "The DuPont Family Genealogy as of 31 Dec 1983"; the Boyd family line; and Gordon Brockington line, Legare, etc..
