Julius Leibert was born in Lithuania in 1888, as Zalkan Lebedko, and emigrated to the U.S. as a young man. He adopted the surname of "Leibert" in honor of his new-found liberty. As a rabbi, his rabbinates included: Spokane, Wash. (1919-1923); Long Beach, Calif. (1923-1928), two different congregations in Los Angeles (1929-1934), and Santa Cruz, Calif.
