U.S. Customs Service customhouse records, 1778-1938 (bulk 1805-1917).

The bulk of the records are from the Castine District with smaller quantities from Bath, Machias, Frenchman's Bay, and Belfast. The turn-of-the century Castine papers show how developing technologies changed the building and the procedures of custom house operation. The long lists of supplies included many popular products of the time, such as Gold Dust, a strong powdered soap. During this time period civil service reform was in motion with the resulting frequent changes of authoritarian structure. Documents include proposals, vouchers, circulars, salt warehouse statements, reports, and a volume describing the 1938 National Archives Works Progress Administration project to extract vessel information from the customs records as well as including papers and pamphlets relating to maritime affairs (1897-1919) including examination papers for Civil Service jobs. Bath District papers include papers of Peter H. Green and some information on trade in tea and spirits; letters relating to politics and jobs in the Whig era with petitions signed by Kennebec area men; and accounts of early days of the Jackman, Me., area when the U.S.A./Canada boundary from New Hampshire to Fort Kent was part of the Bath customs district. The Machias series chiefly relate to matters in Eastern Maine from 1778-1854, mostly Washington County and highlight the activities of William Bartlett Smith who was twice collector at Machias, a lawyer, and historian. Also includes materials concerning his father Capt. Stephen Smith, an early Machias resident, brother George Stillman Smith, and Lemuel G. Downes, lawyer, of Calais, Me.
