Profile series contains five subseries. Subject files are arranged in alphabetical order by topic and contain meeting materials, some correspondence, and papers/essays which relate to the activities Preus participated to top of his duties at Concordia Seminary and Concordia Theological Seminary. Organizations represented include Balance Inc.; Lutheran Concerns Association; God's Word to the Nations Bible Society; Lutheran Bible Translators; Luther Bible Society; International Foundation for Lutheran Confessional Research; International Council on Biblical Inerrancy; A Contemporary Translation; Christians United for Reformation; and Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. Audio/video subseries contains two video recordings of Dr. Preus's presentations and 21 audio tapes. Student days subseries is arranged in alphabetical order by class topic and includes notes and exams from his days as a seminary student at Luther Theological Seminary and Bethany Luthern Theological Seminary. Research series contains three subseries. Subject file subseries contains various essays, papers, statements, notes, and clippings on a large number of theological issues arranged in alphabetical order by topic. Writings by others subseries is arranged alaphabetically and includes artles from non-Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod periodicals, drafts of papers sent to Preus soliciting his opinion, or papers delivered at conferences and conventions. Correspondence series contains two subseries. General correspondence subseries (1945-1996) includes letters to and from family members including his brother, J.A.O. Preus, friends, international colleagues, teaching colleagues, and lay members of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and cover a wide range of topics. Correspondents in this subseries include Harlan Harnapp, E.J. Otto, Tom Hardt, B.W. Teigen, John Klotz, Waldo Werning, Ralph Bohlmann, and A.L. Barry. Secretary correspondence subseries (1978-1984) was kept by Preus's secretary, Trudy Behning, and is mostly routine items such as acknowledgments schedules, and letters to prospective students during his administration as president of Concordia Theological Seminary. Seminary series contains three subseries and contains materials relating to Preus's teaching and administrative duties at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., and Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Ind. The Teaching subseries contains lecture materials, exams, course outlines, and bibliographies. The St. Louis subseries includes materials collected while Preus taught at Concordia Seminary (1957-1974), arranged in alphabetical order by topic and includes faculty opinion papers, joint faculty meeting materials, and documents relating to the 1974 faculty walkout. The Fort Wayne subseries contains files concerning his tenure as president and professor at Concordia Theological Seminary (1978-1995) and are arranged in alphabetical order by topic. Removal from office series is divided into three subseries and arranged alphabetically by topic. Indiana District Commission on Adjudication subseries contains copies of hearing transcripts from Aug. 1991; together with correspondence and documents pertaining to the case including the May 1992 decision of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Commission on Appeals. Documents/writings subseries holds statements and articles, some of which were written by Preus, concerning the action of the Concordia Theological Seminary Board of Regents to remove him as president and that event's aftermath. Biography subseries holds correspondence, notes, and one chapter (draft and edited versions) of a book that was to be written about Dr. Preus with an emphasis on his experiences at Concordia Theological Seminary and his experiences with Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod President Ralph Bohlmann.
