Collection contains Bertram S. Barnes' subject files for the water resource projects he worked on in the Midwest and West, which contain correspondence, reports (some by Barnes), government documents, hydrograph sheets, drawings, and maps. Collection also contains reports written by Barnes, papers and reprints of articles written by Barnes, government documents, and miscellaneous printed materials. Three oversized U.S. Weather Bureau hydrologic map compilations are in this collection as well.

Bertram S. Barnes (d. 1975) was a hydrologist for the federal government and in the private sector during the twentieth century. He worked on water resources projects throughout the Midwestern and Western United States. From 1947 until 1970, the official observations of weather in Boulder were made under the direction of the Boulder fire chief, at the central fire station. The Boulder Fire Department also maintained a weather station at the South Side Fire Station starting in July 1958.
