The collection is divided into materials relating to the history of chemistry and a smaller cache of materials relating to Payne's work with the U.S. Signal Corps. The larger portion of the historical material concerns Robert Peter. There were photographs in the collection, but these have been separated out.

Chemist, physician, teacher. Robert Peter was born in England but emigrated to America in 1817. He lived for a time in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After attending the Rensselaer School, in Troy, New York and lecturing on chemistry at Western University of Pennsylvania, Peter moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where he became a professor of chemistry at Transylvania University. Virgil Francis Payne was born in 1893 near Fulton, MO. He served as head of the Chemistry Department at Transylvania College, where he first became acquainted with the letters and papers of Robert Peter, an illustrious forebear at Transylvania. From 1942 to 1957 he was an employee of the U.S. Signal Corps, working out of their Fort Monmouth laboratories in New Jersey.
