Letter, 4 March 1843.

The collection contains a letter from Sample to the Post Master of Washington. It states, "Ho. Rept. 4th March, P.M. Washington, Dear Sir, If there are any letters in your office addressed to A. Coquillard or to L.G. Comparit you will please send them to me. Those gentlemen have directed me to get them. Respectfully Yours, S.C. Sample." On the verso is the postmark which reads, "S.C. Sample, from Indiana from 1843."

Samuel Caldwell Sample was born in Elkton, Cecil County, Maryland on 15 August 1796. He attended rural school, and learned the trade of carpenter. The family moved to Connersville, Indiana around 1823, where Samuel studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1833 and practiced in South Bend, Indiana where he was also elected prosecuting attorney and a judge. He was also president of the First National Bank of South Bend and was elected as a Whig to Congress from 1843 to 1845. He was not re-electe...
