Roberts migrated from North Carolina to Ohio in 1825, and by 1830 had moved to Rush County, Ind. With relatives he formed the free black community of Beech Settlement. In 1835 Roberts and his relatives purchased land in Hamilton County, Ind. and formed Roberts Settlement. After Elijah Roberts' death in 1848, his wife continued farming the land, and Roberts family descendants inherited or continued to purchase land. Roberts and Beech Settlements continue to have annual homecoming reunions. ...
