Fenollosa was a poet and student of Oriental art. He taught at the Imperial University of Tokyo (1878-1886) and was manager of the Tokyo Fine Arts Academy and the Imperial Museum. The Portland Society of Natural History was incorporated in 1850, succeeding the earlier Maine Institute of Natural Science.
