Selden and Joseph S. Huntington papers, 1819-1872.

Correspondence to Selden Huntington and his wife Jeanette, of Haddam, Connecticut, from family members and friends including Mary Mather, E.H. Mather, Daniel Sayre, and the Huntington's daughter Emily, 1835-1842; letters of introduction for Selden's son Joseph S. and a deed, 1838-1846; and correspondence to Sima Brooks of Butternuts, New York, from her nieces Betsy Blakeslee Sackett and Sima Blakeslee about family matters. The nieces lived in New Haven, Connecticut. The relationship between Huntington and Brooks has not been determined. In addition, there is a folder of correspondence that cannot be assigned to any of the above recipients or authors, 1823-1872; a folder of financial records and lists (some inventories) that are unidentified; and a folder of poems and essays, author unknown.

Joseph Selden Huntington was born in Old Lyme, Connecticut and entered Yale College in 1885, but did not graduate. Following a brief career in journalism and travel in the western United States, he returned to Old Lyme, where he farmed on the family property and become active in local politics. He died in 1929. Joseph Selden Huntington was born on November 24, 1820. He attended school in Kents Hill, Maine and was a merchant in Springfield, Massachusetts and New York City...
