Mather Byles (1735-1814), Episcopal clergyman and Loyalist, was born in Boston, Mass., on 12 January 1735, the son of Mather Byles (1707-1788) and the great-grandson of Increase Mather (1639-1723). He graduated from Harvard in 1751 and settled as minister of the First Congregational Church of New London, Conn., in 1757.
