Papers of Mahlon Loomis, 1847-1947 (bulk 1854-1886).

Correspondence, partial typescript of diary, notes, notebooks, drawings, patents, legal papers, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other papers relating primarily to Loomis' experiments with and the first successful demonstration (1866) of wireless telegraphy. Includes notes and diagrams describing his apparatus and experiments, and his founding of Loomis Aerial Telegraph Company; and papers relating to his dental practice and personal and family life in Washington, D.C., and to his inventions in the field of dentistry. Papers after 1886 relate to efforts of his family and friends to gain recognition for his work, including letters (1936-1847) to and from Dr. William N. Hodgkin who was interested in Loomis' inventions and dental career.
