Henry S. Holmes' memoirs consist of five handwritten volumes relating events that date from the 1850s to 1916. The earliest recollections included in his memoirs are collected in a notebook entitled "Memoirs of People and Things, Written from Time to Time for His Amusement by Henry S. Holmes" containing his reminiscences of his youth, education, and early career (1850s-1880s). The bulk of this account describes life in upstate South Carolina before, during, and after the Civil War. Includes description of life in Pendleton Village as well as nearby homes and plantations such as Fort Hill, Keowee, and Oaklawn. Area families such as the Calhouns and the Warleys and events including the founding of Clemson University are discussed. The 1865 activities of Union cavalry troops under the command of Hugh Judson Kilpatrick in the area are also recounted. Following an account of his life and activities as a student at the College of Charleston (1867-1871), Holmes relates his early career in Charleston as a cotton broker at Gibbes & Barnwell (later Gibbes & Co.) where he would become a partner. Other cotton exporters and brokerages are described, as are other industries such as phosphate mining. The volume closes with a brief narrative of Holmes' travel in Europe during 1881. A second volume, entitled simply "Thoughts" (1894; 1910), contains an essay about culture and change in Charleston in 1894 with a brief update added in 1910. A third small volume entitled "Visits to Philadelphia" is filled with brief accounts of trips to Philadelphia, Penn., which Holmes made in the company of his wife between 1894 and 1917 in pursuit of "rest cures" at an orthopaedic infirmary. The accounts describe both Holmes' visits to famous sites in Philadelphia but also treatments he and his wife received for nervous complaints.
