Nevada's seventh governor was born in Seaport, Waldo County, Maine on April 25, 1839 where he was apprenticed to a ship-builder and became a carpenter. He came west to California in 1856, later to Aurora, Nevada in 1860, and finally to Virginia City in 1863 where he became a successful mining engineer.
