John Adams Dix letter to Erasmus Darwin Keyes, 1862.

Letter dated Fortress Monroe, September 17, [1862], from John A. Dix to Erasmus Darwin Keyes at Yorktown : "The contrabands who are at work must be furnished with food & clothing. [Y]ou can also direct the quartermaster to make them a moderate allowance for their labor which may be considered a fund for the benefit of-- & expended for such necessaries & conforts as they may require."

Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire on July 24 1798, the son of Timothy Dix and Abigail Wilkins, and brother of composer Marion Dix Sullivan. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, and joined the US Army as an ensign in May 1813, serving under his father until the latter's death a few months later.
