Joseph Hamzik papers, Part 2, 1959-1998.

Primarily materials on the history of the Brighton Park community of Chicago (Ill.) researched and written by Joseph Hamzik, including "List of Brighton References in Early Newspapers, 1883-1890," (14 p.); "Construction of the Southwest Expressway thru Brighton Park" (name changed to Stevenson Expressway) (ca. 1959-1964); "Gleanings of Archer Road" (updated ca. 1997); and a set of scrapbooks (3 v.) entitled, "Nostalgic Brighton," by Joseph Hamzik, containing his essays and photographs plus programs, pamphlets, news clippings, and maps. Volume 1 topics include Brighton's early history and initial land purchases, government, livestock, manufacturing, and biographical sketches of early Brighton settlers. Volume 2 topics include church history, public schools, police department, fire department, boulevards and parks, post office and library, origin of street names, and European origin of Brighton Park. Volume 3 topics include Brighton's utilities, railroad history, waterways, Southwest Expressway (renamed Stevenson Expressway), aldermanic history, and rapid transit lines. Also present in the collection are programs from Five Holy Martyrs Catholic Church celebrating the 75th year Diamond Jubilee and 5th anniversary of the visit of Pope John Paul II (1984); and the obituary and mass card for Joseph Hamzik (November 1998).
