A West Point graduate, Robert Ransom served in the U.S. Army under then-Lt Colonel Edwin V. Sumner, 1st U.S. Cavalry, 1855-57. He resigned his army post at the onset of the Civil war to serve in the Confederate Army as Captain of Cavalry. By the end of the war, he reached the rank of Major General.
