Meharry Medical College opened its doors on Oct. 13, 1876 as the Meharry Medical Department of Central Tennessee College, later Walden University, with the purpose of producing "intelligent physicians among the Colored people"; named for benefactors, Samuel Meharry and his four brothers, Hugh, Alexander, David, and Jessie Meharry, who together donated $20,000 in 1875; the school became a separate institution in 1915.
