George Lippitt Andrews was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1828. He entered the Rhode Island Militia in 1844, was promoted to Major in 1848, and to Colonel in 1853. He resigned from the military in 1856. In 1859 he rejoined the military as a Second Lieutenant in the Missouri National Guard. Andrews served in the Civil War and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1862 and then to Colonel in 1863.
