Letter from Beach, Memphis Tenn., to his mother, describing the weather, personal matters, and military life including his living quarters, 500 African American's "chopping wood for the soldiers," money he is owed on payday, Gen. William T. Sherman, and the tale of a soldier in the 53rd Illinois who was taken prisoner at Corinth, Miss., sent to Vicksburg, Miss., and then paroled.
