The Lake Erie Female Seminary was founded in Painesville, Ohio in 1859 as a "daughter college" of Mount Holyoke. The course of study included a variety of mathematics and science courses, as well as courses in history, English, philosphy, Latin, and religion. The first doctor in Painesville, Ohio. He married Martha Devotion Huntington, the daughter of Ohio's third governor. Dr. Mathews had a pharmaceutical company with Jedediah Hills and a medical practice with his half-brother, Dr David Mathews.
